Berlin Wall

Berlin Wall plaque at Honolulu Community College

Not many people know that a piece of history is sitting on Honolulu Community College’s campus in Kalihi. What is it? An actual chunk of the Berlin Wall that divided the German city for over 25 years.

The actual 12 foot and three ton wall is covered in glass to protect it against the weather and vandals. Everything else was fabricated to give a tiny sense of what it must have been like to live in a divided city. Here you can see that the West side was covered in colorful grafitti.

As opposed to the East side of the wall, it’s basically barren and perhaps reflective of the communist rule that governed the city. Supposedly, Honolulu was only one of three U.S. cities to receive such significant pieces of the wall from the Berlin government. An actual history lesson on the grounds of higher learning, how fitting.
